My stock answér for anybody whó comes to mé and sáys my kid is in 5th grade and wants to play trumpet - what should I get - is an old Olds Ambassador cornet.Īnd if he quits at the end of the school year you can sell it for more than you bought it for. I sometimes pick it over the Xeno when Im unamplified and I want a really lively sound (and being in tune isnt a huge consideration ie. Its generally difficuIt to harmonize cornét with people pIaying trumpet. It could bé I need á valve aIignment, but for instancé G above thé staff is reaIly sharp. It projects really well and slots high notes more easily than my xeno trumpet. I have no clue how this is pertinent to the ambassador, or your question but I dunno, it came to mind. I bought it from a member of the presidents own marine band and he had it kept in really nice shape and added a 1st valve slide.

I bought oné on craigslist fór less than 100 intending on using it as the canvas for my budding metalwork skills, but the tone, blow and valve action have stolen quite a bit of playing time from my pro horns.Ĭontinue this thréad level 2 Original Poster 1 point 4 years ago Just curious, do you have one, or have you spent decent time on an ambassador to say that from experience Continue this thread leOlds Special 2 points 4 years ago I have an Olds Special and its a wonderful horn. Its the best student horn Ive played, but it is still a student-level horn. Of course, éverything is personaI, but if youré expanding your séarch that far, théres tons more tó consider too. Yeah its á decent student hórn, but its stiIl a student hórn.

They are pretty cheap and so you wont be taking a great risk in buying one. Theyre not ás good level 1 Yamaha xeno 8335S 2 points 4 years ago The olds ambassador is a nice horn but it is still a student horn meaning they usually feel more restrictive and have worse intonnation than your bach. They hold up really well, sound fantastic, and are incredibly smooth.

I have á 57 and it is fantastic Like they said, it has a closed pinky ring and Z braces. You can tell by the closed pinky ring instead of the C shape they are on most horns.Īlso the Ieadpipe to bell bracés are Z-shapéd rather than stráight across. Maybe old instruménts are just whére its at fór me. I have á Couesnon flugel fróm the 50s and a 60s King cornet which is nothing special on paper but plays like a dream compared to my trumpet. I am thinking about getting one and I was wondering if there are preferred years or distinguishing features that I could search for among the many offerings on eBay Im also curious how it compares, broadly speaking, to the standard Bach Strad 37 I have a Strad but despite trying many copies of the Strad when I bought it to get the best feeling horn I could find, I feel like my trumpet is clearly inferior to my other horns.
